Elizabella
Feminine · “Hebrew Elisheva”
Elizabella looks like a compound of two names. It is really a compound of one name with itself. Isabel began as a Provencal and Spanish form of Elizabeth, shortened at the front and reshaped; Bella is a clip of Isabel. Joining Eliza to Bella rejoins the two halves of a name that split apart eight hundred years ago.

The story of Elizabella
The Elizabeth-to-Isabel split is one of the best documented in European naming. Medieval Occitan and Spanish speakers took Elisabet, lost the unstressed opening syllable in the ordinary way that produces Bastian from Sebastian, and were left with something like Elisabel, which became Isabel. The two forms then traveled separately for centuries and were treated as different names: England had queens called Elizabeth and Spain had queens called Isabel, and nobody in either country regarded them as the same person's name. Only in the nineteenth century did reference books reconnect them. Bella was clipped from Isabella in Italy, crossed to English, and by the 2000s was a name in its own right. Elizabella is what happens when the reference-book connection becomes invisible again and a family joins the two ends without knowing they were ever attached.

Hebrew Elisheva, my God is an oath
Elizabeth is Hebrew Elisheva, usually read as my God is an oath or my God is abundance; the second element is genuinely disputed. Isabel is the same name after Occitan and Spanish speakers dropped the opening syllable and refashioned the ending, and Bella is a clip of Isabel reinforced by Italian bella, beautiful. Elizabella therefore has one source that arrives twice. The peak is 2015.

The Mikelle test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Elizabella's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Mikelle climbed just as high around 1971, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Mikelle's path sketches the road Elizabella is walking now.
Elizabella sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- It contains three complete names as short forms: Eliza, Ella and Bella.
- Every part of it is familiar even though the whole is not.
- The formal register is available and so is the informal one.
- Five syllables is long for everyday use and it will be shortened.
- Elizabeth and Isabella are both far commoner and will be assumed as misspellings.
- The two halves are historically the same name, which some will find redundant.
