Where it comes from

The story of Elanna

Tu BiShvat is a minor date in the rabbinic calendar with a technical purpose: it fixed the year for calculating agricultural tithes on fruit. Its modern character is quite different. Zionist settlement in the early twentieth century made it a day for planting trees, and the Jewish National Fund built a whole practice around it, so that generations of children in Israel and abroad planted saplings or collected money for them on that date. The date's association with trees, arboriculture and the physical land is entirely modern and entirely deliberate. The name Ilana belongs to the same program: a revived language building a native name stock from its own vocabulary, and choosing words about growth, land, water and light. Ilan, Ilana, Alon, an oak, Tamar, a date palm, Vered, a rose, and Sivan and Nisan, months, are all part of it.

Hebrew ilana, a tree

Elanna is most likely a spelling of Elana or Ilana, from Hebrew ilan, a tree, with a feminine ending. The name belongs to the modern Israeli stock of nature words used as given names. It may alternatively be read as a formation on the El- element, from Hebrew el, God, or as an American coinage. It peaks in 2014.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Elanna went to 11 girls in 2025, but Elana, Ellana and Elanah are the same name said out loud. Together the 4 spellings went to 125, which makes it the 835th most-given girls’ name of the year — 8,025 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 12,858 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 146,115 for Elanna itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
