The story of Edgard
The ead element is the commonest first element in Old English royal naming and its range of meaning is wider than any single modern word. It covers material wealth, good fortune, and the state of being blessed, which in an early medieval society were not clearly separable ideas: a prosperous man was a lucky man and a lucky man was favored. The related adjective eadig meant happy or rich indifferently. When the word dropped out of the language after the Conquest, the names carried it forward as a sound. Edward survived because of the Confessor's cult and three medieval kings; Edmund because of a martyred king of East Anglia; Edgar because of a tenth-century king and later because Walter Scott and Shakespeare both used it. Edgard, with its French final consonant, is a nineteenth-century continental import of an English name.
