Dymond
Feminine · “diamond”
Dymond is given to both — 1,876 girls and 86 boys since 1880. See other names given to both
Dymond is the word diamond with its middle rewritten: the ia replaced by a y, which shortens the name on the page without shortening it in the mouth. It is also, separately, an old English surname, most at home in the West Country. Girls and boys receive this spelling in close to equal numbers, which is unusual enough to be worth knowing in advance.

The story of Dymond
Two separate things arrive at this spelling. One is the noun: a Greek word for the unbreakable, borrowed into Latin, softened through French, and settled in English as the name of a stone. The other is a surname — Dymond, long recorded in Devon and the surrounding counties, where it is simply the old spelling of the same word before English fixed its vowels. As a given name it belongs to the American practice of naming children after valuable things, a practice with a long and entirely respectable history behind it: Ruby, Pearl, Opal and Jewel all predate it by generations. Dymond arrived late in that line and took the y with it, which is what separates it from the noun on paper.
Meaning
diamond; unbreakable
The stone's name reaches English through Old French diamant from Latin adamas, itself the Greek adamas — unconquerable, or untameable. The Greek is built from a negative and a verb meaning to tame, so the oldest sense is not brilliance but refusal to break; it was first applied to the hardest metal known and only later fixed to the stone. The y-spelling changes none of that. It is a decision about letters, not a different word.

Pronouncing Dymond
DYE-mund
Two syllables, exactly as the stone is usually said: DYE-mund. Careful speakers give it three, DYE-uh-mund, which is also how the word is often printed in dictionaries. The y-spelling nudges toward the two-syllable version.

The Tomi test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Dymond's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Tomi climbed just as high around 1953, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Tomi's path sketches the road Dymond is walking now.
Dymond sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- The sound is a word every English speaker knows, so it is never mispronounced — only misspelled.
- It goes to boys and girls in near-equal numbers, so it arrives without an assumption attached.
- The y distinguishes the page from the noun while leaving the spoken name completely intact.
- It will be written Diamond nearly every time, by teachers, clinics and databases alike, and the y has to be supplied at each turn.
- A word-name carries the word with it: jewelry, value, expense. That association is fixed and cannot be argued down.
- Because the split between girls and boys is close to even, nobody reading the name on paper can tell which, and forms will guess wrong in both directions.
Nobody names a baby alone.
