The story of Dyland
Dylan appears in the fourth branch of the Mabinogi, a Welsh prose collection written down in the Middle Ages from far older material, and he barely stays on land long enough for the story to name him. The name was revived in Wales in the twentieth century and carried worldwide by a poet from Swansea and then by a songwriter who took his stage name from that poet. Latin American families took it up in the two-thousands, adding a final d in the way Spanish orthography often does with English-looking names.
Meaning
great tide; sea
Welsh dy, an intensifying prefix, with llanw, a tide or flow, giving something like great tide or great sea. The added d at the end of this spelling carries no meaning and is an American and Latin American extension.

The Cleavon test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Dyland's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Cleavon climbed just as high around 1973, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Cleavon's path sketches the road Dyland is walking now.
Dyland sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- The meaning is the sea, which is concrete, documented and easy to state.
- It carries a genuine medieval Welsh source rather than a modern coinage.
- It is uncommon while sounding entirely familiar.
- Dylan is the standard spelling everywhere, so the final d will be dropped by most people.
- The y is said two different ways depending on the language.
- It reads as a misspelling to English speakers, though it is a deliberate form in Spanish.
