Dupree
Masculine · “French du pre”
French surnames swallowed the article. Dupont is du pont, of the bridge; Dubois of the wood; Dulac of the lake; Delacroix of the cross. English did the same job with a bare noun and produced Bridge, Wood and Lake, which is why French surnames are longer.

The story of Dupree
When French surnames were forming, the ordinary way to identify a man by where he lived was with a preposition and an article, and both fused into the name: Dupont, Dubois, Dulac, Dupre, Duval, Delacroix, Delaporte, Laroche, Lafontaine, Larue. English used the same construction in the earliest records, giving atte Wood and atte Bridge, but the preposition and article dropped away, leaving Wood, Bridge, Field and Lake. So the two languages made topographic surnames from identical materials and ended up with names of visibly different shape, and a French surname is usually recognizable at a glance for that reason alone. Dupre also traveled to Louisiana and the Caribbean with French settlement, which is one route by which it became an American given name.
Meaning

The Nicanor test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Dupree's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Nicanor climbed just as high around 1954, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Nicanor's path sketches the road Dupree is walking now.
Dupree sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
