The story of Dorien
The Dorians were one of the divisions of the ancient Greeks, associated with Sparta, Corinth, Crete and the Peloponnese, and distinguished by dialect from the Ionians and Aeolians. Their name attached itself to a great deal: the Doric order of architecture, the plainest of the three; the Dorian mode in music, which is not the mode the Greeks called Dorian, since medieval theorists misapplied the names; and, in English, the adjective doric for broad rural speech. Wilde took the word as a first name for his portrait novel in 1890, and it entered use in the twentieth century with no earlier history at all. The name is therefore one of the small set that can be dated to a single publication, alongside Wendy, Vanessa, Jessica and Imogen.
