Donella
Feminine · “world-ruler”
Donella is a woman's name made out of a man's. Donald, in its Gaelic form Domhnall, takes the Latin-shaped -ella that Scotland used for exactly this purpose — Donalda and Donella both come out of the same habit. Said aloud it is three unhurried syllables with the weight in the middle.

The story of Donella
The Scottish Highlands made women's names out of men's names on purpose and at scale: Donalda from Donald, Williamina from William, Alexandrina from Alexander. Donella belongs to that practice, taking Domhnall — a name carried by Scottish kings long before it was carried by anyone's grandfather — and giving it the -ella ending that Latin and Italian had made familiar across Europe. It reached America with Scottish families, then found a second life inside the mid-century American fondness for the Don- sound, where Donna, Donnie and Donald were all in heavy use at once. Neither arrival made it common, and it has stayed a name people meet one at a time.

world-ruler; or, on the other reading, a young woman
Two origins compete and both are real. If Donella is the Scottish feminine of Domhnall, the meaning is Donald's: an old Celtic compound of the words for world and rule, a chieftain's name. If it is instead the Italian donnella, a small form of donna, it means a young woman and descends from Latin domina. The two roots have nothing to do with each other, and the spelling picks neither, so a Donella can honestly claim either.

The Oralee test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Donella's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Oralee climbed just as high around 1910, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Oralee's path sketches the road Donella is walking now.
Donella sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- It is one of very few women's names built on Donald that does not sound like a substitution, because Nella and Ella are already inside it.
- Three syllables ending in a vowel, which sits easily against a short or blunt surname.
- Familiar in shape to anyone who knows Estella or Marcella, so it gets spelled right from hearing more often than most names this rare.
- The two possible origins point in opposite directions — a Gaelic war-compound and an Italian word for a young woman — and there is no way to settle which one any given family meant.
- Donna will be offered instead, out loud and on forms, because it is the shorter familiar name hiding in the same sound.
- It carries a family relation to Donald whether or not that is wanted; anyone who knows the Scottish habit hears it at once.
