Djuan
Masculine · “Hebrew Yochanan”
Djuan is overwhelmingly a boys’ name — 1,521 boys against 7 girls since 1880.
The letter J already contains a d. In English it is exactly the sound of d followed by the zh of measure, which is why dj is a redundant spelling: Djuan writes the same consonant twice. English only ever uses dj in borrowed words such as djinn and Djibouti, where it came from French.

The story of Djuan
French used dj to transliterate the j sound of Arabic, Turkish and various African languages, because French j is the zh of measure and needed help to make the harder English sound. That is where English got Djibouti, djellaba, and the older spelling Djakarta. American naming borrowed the digraph in the 1960s and 1970s for the visual effect rather than the phonetic one, since English j already does the job. The result is a spelling that is technically redundant and practically informative: it tells you the name was written down in a period when spelling was being used as a distinguishing device. The same instinct produced Dwan, Dvon and Dquan, all of which put a consonant in front of a name that did not need one, and all of which are unmistakable on paper, which was the point.

Hebrew Yochanan, Yah is gracious
Djuan is an American formation built on Juan, the Spanish form of John, from Latin Johannes and Hebrew Yochanan, Yah is gracious. The added D and the dj spelling are decorative and change nothing about the sound. Some bearers may instead have a form of Dejuan or Dwan. The peak is 1976.

Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Djuan's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Bernardino climbed just as high around 1949, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Bernardino's path sketches the road Djuan is walking now.
