Where it comes from

The story of Devynn

Devin entered American use as a boys' name in the 1960s and rose steadily; it began appearing for girls in the 1980s, and by the 1990s the two curves were running in parallel. That is the point at which respelling starts, because a name used equally for both sexes gives a reader no information. Devyn, Devynn, Devon and Devonne all appear in the female column in those years, and Devynn — with both the y and the doubled n — is the most heavily marked of them. It peaked in 1995, at the top of the whole cluster.

Irish, probably "descendant of Damhán", or from the English county of Devon

Two unrelated sources feed the modern name. The Irish surname Ó Damháin comes from damhán, a fawn or a little stag. The English county Devon is named for the Dumnonii, a Celtic people whose name may relate to a word for deep. Devin as a given name draws on both and the records do not distinguish them.

Devynn sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2009, with 57 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Devynn went to 15 girls in 2025, but Devyn and Devin are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 273, which makes it the 693rd most-given girls’ name of the year — 6,440 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 5,887 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 107,151 for Devynn itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The spelling gives a sex signal that the plain form does not.
  • There is a genuine Irish surname and an English county behind it.
  • Dev works as a short form in any register.
What to consider
  • Four spellings of the same sound are in use and none dominates.
  • The name still reads as male to many people despite the respelling.
  • The 1990s peak dates the doubled spelling.
