Desarae
Feminine · “desired”
Désirée Clary was engaged to Napoleon and married someone else. The man she married became King of Sweden, and every Swedish monarch since has descended from her — so a silk merchant's daughter from Marseille founded a royal house that is still on the throne. Her name means desired, and Desarae is one of a dozen American spellings of it.

The story of Desarae
Désirée Clary was briefly engaged to Napoleon, married Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte, and became Queen of Sweden when he was elected to that throne — an unlikely career, and the reason the name has a royal dimension in Scandinavia that it lacks anywhere else. The name entered American use in the twentieth century and became widely given in the 1980s, at which point the spellings multiplied: Desiree, Desirae, Desarae, Deserae, Dezirae. This one appears from 1968 and peaked in 1995.
Meaning
desired, longed for
From the French désirée, the past participle of désirer, to desire — so the one who was wished for. Behind it is the Latin Desideratus, which early Christian families gave to a child who had been long awaited. It is one of the very few names that says something about the parents' waiting rather than about the child.
How the name formed

Pronouncing Desarae
dez-uh-RAY
Three syllables with the stress at the back, which the -ae ending guarantees. French says the accented original the same way; the accents are what make the final syllable audible there, and the American spelling achieves it with letters instead.

The Adelyne test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Desarae's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Adelyne climbed just as high around 1914, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Adelyne's path sketches the road Desarae is walking now.
Desarae sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Desi and Rae are both available and belong to different registers.
- The meaning is warm, unusual and about the parents rather than the child.
- The historical bearer has one of the more improbable biographies available.
- The stress is fixed by the ending, so the name is rarely said wrong.
- Desiree is the standard spelling and will be written instead on nearly everything.
- At least five spellings compete, so dictating the letters is permanent.
- The accents belong on it in French and will never survive an American form.
