Demetric
Masculine · “Greek Demetrios”
Demetric is given to both — 2,135 boys and 411 girls since 1880. See other names given to both
Demeter is the goddess of grain, and the second half of her name is mother. Nobody has ever explained the first half. De- has been read as earth, as barley, as a lost word for grain, and as none of those; two and a half thousand years of Greek scholarship has not settled it. A name that has been continuously used since the Bronze Age is half unreadable.

The story of Demetric
Demeter is one of the few Olympian names attested in Linear B, the Mycenaean script used before 1200 BC, which places her worship several centuries before Homer. Her cult at Eleusis was the most important mystery religion in the Greek world, running for close to two thousand years until Christian emperors closed it, and initiates were forbidden on pain of death to describe what happened there. They kept the secret: we still do not know what the Eleusinian Mysteries consisted of. Her name gave one of the commonest Greek personal names, Demetrios, which passed into Russian as Dmitri, into Latin as Demetrius, and into English through the New Testament, where a silversmith of that name starts a riot at Ephesus. The American Demetric adds an ending that does nothing etymologically and a great deal stylistically.

Greek Demetrios, of Demeter
Demetrius means belonging to Demeter, and Demeter's own name is only half explained: meter is mother, and the de- element is disputed. Proposals include a pre-Greek word for earth, a word for barley, and a form of the root that gives Greek ge, earth. None commands agreement. Demetric is an American formation adding a -ic ending to the stem, and appears in the data from the 1960s onward, peaking in 1977.

The Jerrel test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Demetric's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Jerrel climbed just as high around 1934, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Jerrel's path sketches the road Demetric is walking now.
