Where it comes from

Our story of Delon

The date is what makes this name interesting. Delon appears in American birth records in the 1960s and peaks in 1973 — precisely the years in which Alain Delon was at the height of an international career that had run from Plein Soleil in 1960 through Le Samouraï in 1967 and Borsalino in 1970. He was, by common account, one of the most recognizable faces in world cinema. At the same time the De- prefix was fully productive in American naming, generating Delon, Delaine, Deron and Delano without any outside help. So there are two entirely sufficient explanations for the same name in the same decade, and the record cannot separate them. The honest position notes the coincidence and does not resolve it.

Meaningnot established

Not established

No source establishes an etymology. As an American formation it is the De- prefix joined to a -lon ending, neither of which has a documented meaning. The French surname Delon is a separate matter: French surnames beginning de l' are locative, meaning of the place, though the second element here is not securely identified. Nothing connects the American given name to the French surname beyond the coincidence of sound and the fame of one bearer.

Pronouncing Delon

Delon sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1993, with 40 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.
