Damani sits in the -mani rhyme family that has been one of the most productive in African-American naming for forty years: Imani, Amani, Zamani, Damani. Two of those are genuine Swahili words and the rest are American, and telling them apart is the whole story of this name. It has been used on both sexes, with the girls' record peaking in the early 2010s.

Our story of Damani
The honest account of Damani is an account of a rhyme. In the 1970s, Kwanzaa put a short list of Swahili words into wide American circulation, and two of them became names quickly because they already sounded like names: Imani and Amani. A rhyme family formed around them, and once a family exists it fills itself in — the ear supplies the missing members before any dictionary is consulted. Change the first consonant and you get Damani, Jamani, Ramani, Zamani. Each new member borrows the dignity of the two genuine words without descending from them. This is not a defect in the name; it is how English has always made names, and it is exactly how Vanessa, Wendy and Pamela were made. What it does mean is that Damani's story belongs to American English, and the honest version of it is more interesting than a borrowed gloss would be.
Meaningnot established
Not established
No documented meaning in any language that can be shown to feed the American name. Baby-name lists frequently gloss Damani as 'thoughtful' and attribute it to an unspecified African language; that gloss has no dictionary behind it and no language attached, which is the standard signature of an invention. Two real things do exist nearby: Damani is a genuine surname in western India, and the Swahili neighbors Imani, 'faith', and Amani, 'peace', are ordinary words. Neither yields Damani.

The Janny test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Damani's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Janny climbed just as high around 1955, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Janny's path sketches the road Damani is walking now.
Damani sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
