The story of Dallis
The Scottish surname Dallas traveled to America and became a given name in the nineteenth century, well before the Texas city was large enough to dominate the association. As the city grew, the given name acquired a geographic reading it had not had before, and respellings appeared that pull it back towards the surname — Dallis, Dallys, Dalis. Dallis peaked in 1939, and the -is ending also makes it read as unisex, which the -as ending does not.

Scottish, from a place name meaning "meadow dwelling" or similar
Dallas is a village in Moray, Scotland, and the surname comes from it. The place name is generally read as containing a Brittonic or Pictish element, perhaps dol, a meadow or haugh, with a second element variously given. The Texas city was named in 1841 for someone whose identity is genuinely uncertain — several candidates have been proposed and none is documented.

The Wilmar test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Line the two peaks up, and Wilmar's path sketches the road Dallis is walking now.

The trade-off
- It has a genuine Scottish place and surname behind it.
- The -is spelling separates it from the Texas city on paper.
- It works for both sexes, which some families want.
- Dallas is far more common and will be written instead.
- The Scottish place name's meaning is not fully settled.
- The 1939 peak makes it a revival.
