The story of Dallis
Scottish place names became surnames, surnames crossed to North America, and a handful of them were attached to new towns in the nineteenth century; Dallas is one of the very few that then became a national byword through a city rather than a family. Its use as a given name in the United States is late twentieth century and was helped by a television series that ran from 1978, and once the sound was established the respellings began, as they always do. Dallis substitutes an i for the a in the final syllable, which cannot be heard because that syllable is unstressed, and the change works entirely on the page. Its best year on record is 2013.

meadow dwelling, from a Scottish place name
The Moray parish of Dallas takes its name from Pictish or Brittonic elements usually read as dail, a meadow or haugh, plus a second element meaning dwelling or station. The identity of the person the Texas city is named for is itself unsettled, with George Mifflin Dallas the most-cited candidate and several others proposed. The -is ending of this spelling is modern and carries no meaning.

The Kellianne test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Dallis's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Kellianne climbed just as high around 1986, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Kellianne's path sketches the road Dallis is walking now.

The trade-off
- Sounds exactly like a well-known word while looking like a personal name on paper.
- A genuine Scottish place and surname behind it, not an invention.
- Works equally on a boy, which some families count as an advantage.
- The Texas city is the first thing almost every American will think of.
- Dallas is the standard spelling and will be substituted on most forms.
- It is also the name of a common pasture grass, named after a different Dallis entirely.
