Dalaney
Feminine · “descendant of Dubhshlaine”
Dalaney and Delaney sound exactly the same, because the first vowel of the name is unstressed and English reduces every unstressed vowel to the same neutral sound. Which letter you write there is therefore a free choice: it changes the look of the name and nothing else.

The story of Dalaney
The Delaneys are a Leinster family, and the surname crossed to the United States in volume during the nineteenth century famine emigration. Its move into girls' given names came in the 1990s, alongside a whole cohort of Irish surnames that American parents adopted for daughters. Dalaney is one of several respellings that followed, and its logic is purely visual: because the opening syllable carries no stress, its vowel cannot be heard, so writers were free to substitute a for e without anyone noticing by ear. The same freedom produced Madalyn beside Madelyn and Cassadee beside Cassidy. Dalaney's best year was 2005.
Meaning
descendant of Dubhshlaine, a byname combining black with the river Slaney
The Irish surname is O Dubhshlaine. Dubh means black or dark; Slaine is the river Slaney in Leinster, and also an old personal name. The usual reading is therefore dark one of the Slaney. The alternative sometimes printed, dark challenger, comes from a different parsing of the second element and is the weaker of the two.

Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Dalaney's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Jory climbed just as high around 1950, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Jory's path sketches the road Dalaney is walking now.
