Daeshawn
Masculine
Daeshawn is overwhelmingly a boys’ name — 855 boys against 5 girls since 1880.
A great many of these names once had an apostrophe. Da'Shawn, De'Andre, Ja'Marcus were written that way through the 1980s and 90s, and then the apostrophes disappeared. Not because families stopped using them, but because school databases, insurance systems and government forms rejected the character. Software reshaped a naming tradition.

Our story of Daeshawn
Our reading is that the vanished apostrophe is a real piece of history worth recording. Internal capitals and apostrophes were part of how these names were written, and they were doing visible work: marking the join, showing the name as constructed of two pieces rather than one. What removed them was not fashion but data entry. Systems built in the 1970s and 80s restricted name fields to letters, and an apostrophe in a name field could break a database query, which is why O'Brien has caused software problems for fifty years. Families filling in forms found the character stripped, then found their child's records inconsistent, and eventually dropped it. The names survived; the punctuation did not. This is one of the clearer cases of technology editing a language, and it happened almost entirely without comment.

Daeshawn is an American formation joining the Da or Dae prefix to Shawn, an English respelling of the Irish Sean, ultimately Hebrew Yochanan, God is gracious. That etymology reaches the name through so many stages that it carries no force here. The prefix has no meaning in any language. It peaks in 1997.

The Naomi test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Daeshawn's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Naomi climbed just as high around 1924, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Naomi's path sketches the road Daeshawn is walking now.
Daeshawn sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
