Adrian means from Hadria, a town in northern Italy that gave its name to the Adriatic Sea. The emperor Hadrian's family came from there. So the name is a place adjective twice removed: a man named after a town, and a sea named after the same town, and neither the man nor the sea was ever in it.

Where it comes from

Our story of Dadrian

Our reading is that Dadrian is a prefix name whose second element happens to have an unusually clean etymology, and it is worth setting the two halves side by side. Adrian is documented completely: a town, an adjective formed from it, a Roman family that carried the adjective, an emperor, six popes and a saint. Every step is on record. The Da- prefix is documented not at all, because it is not from a language: it entered American naming in the mid twentieth century as a syllable, alongside De-, La- and Ja-, and it has never meant anything. Putting them together makes a name that is half fully explicable and half not explicable in principle. That is the normal condition of prefix coinages built on inherited names, and it is more interesting than either half alone.

Meaning

Latin Hadrianus, of Hadria

Dadrian joins the American Da- prefix to Adrian, from Latin Hadrianus, belonging to Hadria. Hadria, modern Adria, is a town in the Veneto that was a port in antiquity and gave the Adriatic its name; the river has since silted and the town is now inland. The emperor Hadrian's family originated there before settling in Spain. The prefix carries no meaning. It peaks in 2000.
