The story of Curry
Ó means grandson or descendant and Mac means son, and both were systematically stripped from Irish surnames during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, partly by clerks and partly by families adapting to English administration and emigration. By 1900 the great majority of Irish surnames in Ireland and in America appeared without them: Brien for Ó Briain, Connor for Ó Conchobhair, Curry for Ó Comhraidhe. The Gaelic revival and independence reversed the trend, and through the twentieth century large numbers of families restored the prefix, so that O'Brien and O'Connor are now far commoner than the bare forms. American families, having left before the reversal, mostly did not, which is why the bare forms are relatively more common in the United States than in Ireland. One letter, and it records an emigration date.

Curry is the anglicization of several Irish surnames, chiefly O Comhraidhe and O Corra, and also of Scottish Currie, from a place name in Midlothian. The Irish personal names behind them are of uncertain meaning. The English food word curry is unrelated, from Tamil kari, a sauce, and entered English separately in the sixteenth century. The American peak of the given name is 1896.
