The story of Cotton
The Arabic contribution to English vocabulary runs mostly through two channels, trade goods and science, and both came through Spain. Sugar, syrup, saffron, lemon, orange, apricot, artichoke, coffee and cotton are the goods; algebra, algorithm, alchemy, alkali, zenith, nadir, azimuth and cipher are the science. A great many of them still carry the Arabic article al- fused to the front, which is why English has alcohol rather than cohol. Cotton lost its article on the way. The surname is entirely separate and much older in England, and it produced Cotton Mather, the Massachusetts minister born in 1663, whose first name was his mother's maiden name in the Southern manner. The American given name peaks in 2011, part of the recent revival of plain English nouns as boys' names.

Old English cot, a cottage
As a surname, Cotton is a place name from Old English cotum, at the cottages, and has nothing to do with the fiber. As a common noun, cotton comes from Arabic qutn through Old French coton and is one of several hundred Arabic loanwords that entered European languages through medieval Spain and Sicily. Which of the two an American family has in mind when using the name is not recoverable, and both readings are present.

Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Cotton's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Brinson climbed just as high around 1955, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Brinson's path sketches the road Cotton is walking now.
