Where it comes from

The story of Corbyn

Corbin came to England with the Normans as a byname and settled as a surname across the west of England, and it also appears in Arthurian romance as the castle of the Fisher King, which is why it recurs in later literature. Its use as an American given name is recent and belongs to the general movement of surnames into first names; the y spelling followed the i one, as it usually does, and is used more often for girls, because y is one of the standard American markers for a girls' version of a surname name. Corbyn's best year on the female side is 2017, and the name remains much more common on boys.

Meaning

raven, little crow

From Old French corbin or corbeau, a crow or raven, a diminutive of Latin corvus. As a Norman byname it described coloring or disposition. The same habit gave English the surnames Agnew, from the lamb, and Mallard, from the wild drake; the animal surnames of medieval England are almost all observations rather than honors. The -yn ending in this spelling is a modern English substitution for -in.

Corbyn sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2017, with 31 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

#893
counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Corbyn went to 18 girls in 2025, but Korbyn, Korbin and Corbin are the same name said out loud. Together the 4 spellings went to 67, which makes it the 893rd most-given girls’ name of the year — 5,432 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 23,989 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 89,293 for Corbyn itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A documented Norman byname with a concrete meaning behind it.
  • The raven is a strong, specific image that needs no explaining.
  • Cory is available as a warmer everyday form.
What to consider
  • Corbin is the standard spelling and is much more common on boys.
  • In Britain the surname carries a well-known political association.
  • The y is the only thing marking this as a girl's version, and it is easy to miss.
