Where it comes from

The story of Corbin

The Tower ravens are the most famous birds in Britain and the story attached to them is young. The prophecy about the kingdom falling if they leave is absent from every early account of the Tower, appears first in print towards the end of the nineteenth century, and looks like a piece of Victorian atmosphere that hardened into tradition; the birds themselves were probably not resident before then either. The raven's older reputation is genuinely deep: Odin's two ravens report to him on the world, the Welsh Bran the Blessed is a raven, and the bird's habit of following armies made it a battlefield omen across northern Europe. Corbin and Corbett both preserve the word as a nickname turned surname, and the American given name comes from that surname rather than from the bird.

Meaning

Old French corbin, a raven

From Old French corbin, a little crow or raven, from Latin corvus. It began as a nickname, presumably for dark hair or coloring, and became a surname. The name is overwhelmingly male in American use; the small female peak is 1995.

Corbin sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1995, with 36 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Corbin went to 9 girls in 2025, but Korbyn, Corbyn and Korbin are the same name said out loud. Together the 4 spellings went to 67, which makes it the 893rd most-given girls’ name of the year — 9,214 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 23,989 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 178,585 for Corbin itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
