Where it comes from

The story of Corban

Qorban is a technical term of temple worship — the offering by which a worshipper draws near — and Mark's gospel preserves it untranslated in a passage about a man declaring his property corban to avoid supporting his parents. The word therefore reaches English readers with a sharp edge on it. Its use as a given name is recent and English-speaking, and it is helped by its resemblance to the surname Corbin, which is unrelated.

Meaning

an offering dedicated to God

From Hebrew qorban, a sacrifice or gift brought to the temple, built on a verb meaning to draw near; the gospel of Mark quotes the word in Aramaic and then explains it, which is how it entered English.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Corban went to 35 boys in 2025, but Korban is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 43, which makes it the 885th most-given boys’ name of the year — 2,429 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 39,723 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 48,802 for Corban itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
