Conrado
Masculine · “Germanic kuoni and rad”
Aethelred the Unready was not unprepared. His name meant noble counsel, and the nickname his enemies gave him, unraed, meant no counsel or bad counsel. It was a pun on his own name, and it has been mistranslated for eight hundred years. The element being punned on, raed, counsel, is the second half of Conrad.

The story of Conrado
The raed element carried real weight in a society where kingship depended on the quality of the advice a ruler took. The Anglo-Saxon king's council was the witan, the wise men, and unraed is not a comment on punctuality but on governing badly: counsel-less. Aethelred II was given the byword by later chroniclers, and the joke depends on hearing his name and the nickname together, which English speakers stopped doing once raed left the language. The same element in German is Rat, still the ordinary word for advice and for a council, so a German speaker meeting Konrad hears something an English speaker meeting Conrad does not. That gap between what a name means and what its bearers can hear is the normal condition of Germanic names in English, and it is why the etymologies feel like discoveries rather than reminders.

The Holt test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Conrado's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Holt climbed just as high around 1906, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Holt's path sketches the road Conrado is walking now.
