Where it comes from

The story of Coley

Nicholas is the clearest case of a single name fragmenting past recognition. Greek Nikolaos gave Latin Nicolaus, and from there every European language took a piece. English produced Nicholas, Nick, Nicol, Colin, Cole and Colley. Dutch produced Klaas and Sinterklaas, which American English borrowed as Santa Claus, so the Christmas figure and the name Cole are the same word. Russian produced Nikolai and Kolya, where Kolya is formed by exactly the same back-clipping that gave English Cole. Italian gave Niccolo and Nico, French gave Nicolas and Colas, Scots gave Nicol. The reason for the spread is St Nicholas of Myra, whose cult was enormous in both the Eastern and Western churches, and whose relics were carried to Bari in 1087, giving Western Europe a shrine and the name a second surge.

Greek nikolaos, victory of the people

Coley is most likely a diminutive of Cole, itself a medieval short form of Nicholas, from Greek nikolaos, victory of the people. Two other sources are real: Cole from Old English col, coal, a nickname for someone dark, and the surname Coley from a place name meaning charcoal clearing. The American peak is 1893, in the period when -ey and -ie diminutives were commonly registered as full given names in the South.
