Cinthia
Feminine · “Greek Kynthia”
Cinthia is overwhelmingly a girls’ name — 6,138 girls against 6 boys since 1880.
Cynthia was never a name. It was an address. Kynthia meant of Mount Kynthos, the hill on Delos where Artemis and Apollo were said to have been born, and Greek and Roman poets used it as a way of naming the goddess without naming her. Cinthia is the Spanish spelling of that epithet, and it peaks in 1996.

The story of Cinthia
Ancient religion used epithets constantly, and a surprising number of modern names are epithets rather than names. Delia is of Delos, another title of the same goddess. Phoebe is the bright one, a title of her too. Cynthia is a third. The Roman poet Propertius wrote a whole book of elegies to a woman he called Cynthia, and Renaissance poets took the word from him and applied it to Elizabeth I, whose court cultivated the image of a chaste moon goddess. That is how the word entered English as a name at all: not from Greece directly but from sixteenth-century flattery. It reached Spanish-speaking countries in the twentieth century through English and film, which is why the Spanish spelling keeps the Greek th, a sound Spanish has no use for, while correcting the y that Spanish does not permit.
Meaning
Greek Kynthia, of Mount Kynthos
An epithet of Artemis, and by extension of the moon, formed from the name of the mountain on the island of Delos. Her brother Apollo carried the matching epithet Kynthios. The i-for-y spelling follows Spanish orthography, which does not use y as a vowel inside words, and the th is kept from the Latin form though Spanish pronounces it as a plain t or s depending on region.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Cinthia went to 13 girls in 2025, but Cynthia, Cinthya and Synthia are the same name said out loud. Together the 4 spellings went to 279, which makes it the 688th most-given girls’ name of the year — 7,197 places above the chart.
About 1 girl in 5,761 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 123,636 for Cinthia itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Liane test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Cinthia's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Liane climbed just as high around 1959, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Liane's path sketches the road Cinthia is walking now.
Cinthia sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
