Cinthya
Feminine · “Greek Kynthia”
Cynthia has a y then an i. Cinthya has an i then a y. The two letters have simply traded places, and the result looks foreign in both directions: too Spanish for an English reader, too English for a Spanish one. It is a perfect swap, and it changes nothing that can be heard.

The story of Cinthya
Spanish and English divide these two letters differently and the division is systematic. Spanish uses i for the vowel everywhere inside a word and reserves y for the conjunction, for word-final position and for the consonant; English inherited y as a vowel from Greek loanwords and uses it freely in the middle of words. So a name with a Greek y is written with i in Spanish, which is why Cinthia, Cintia and Silvia are the standard forms there. Cinthya belongs to neither system. It is the kind of spelling that arises when a name is being written from memory by someone who knows both languages and is following neither closely, and it is extremely common in Mexican American records. That does not make it an error so much as a third convention, one that signals bilingualism rather than either language.
Meaning
Greek Kynthia, of Mount Kynthos
An epithet of the goddess Artemis, formed from Mount Kynthos on the island of Delos, where she and Apollo were said to have been born. Cynthia is the English spelling, Cinthia the Spanish one. Cinthya transposes the two vowels, producing a form that follows neither language's rules: Spanish does not use y inside words, and English does not use i where Cynthia has y. It peaks in 1994.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Cinthya went to 12 girls in 2025, but Cynthia, Cinthia and Synthia are the same name said out loud. Together the 4 spellings went to 279, which makes it the 688th most-given girls’ name of the year — 7,674 places above the chart.
About 1 girl in 5,761 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 133,939 for Cinthya itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Marsheila test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Cinthya's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Marsheila climbed just as high around 1957, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Marsheila's path sketches the road Cinthya is walking now.
Cinthya sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
