Chyann
Feminine
Cheyenne has eight letters and Chyann has six. The respelling does two things at once: it removes the -enne ending that English readers handle badly, and it replaces the opening with a ch that has to be read as sh — which English does in machine and Chicago and almost nowhere else. It is a lean version of a long word.

The story of Chyann
The word reached English through the fur trade and the army, attached itself to a river and to the capital of Wyoming, and became an American girls' name in the second half of the twentieth century. Once it was widely given the respellings arrived, and they mostly worked on the ending, which is the part English readers stumble over. This version goes further and rewrites the front as well. It appears in the record from 1980 and peaked in 1999.
Meaningnot established
Not established
Cheyenne is not a Cheyenne word. It comes from the Dakota name for that people, usually read as something like those who speak differently, and the Cheyenne call themselves Tsitsistas. So the name has a meaning in a language that is not the one it names, which is common among the names outsiders give and worth stating plainly.

Two syllables with the stress at the back. The ch is a sh, following the French spelling of the original — which is where the word entered English — and not the ch of church.

The Katrine test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Chyann's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Katrine climbed just as high around 1915, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Katrine's path sketches the road Chyann is walking now.
Chyann sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- It is six letters where the standard spelling takes eight.
- Ann is visible inside it and available as a plain everyday name.
- The stress is fixed by the shape, so it is rarely said wrong once heard.
- Cheyenne is the standard spelling and will be written on nearly everything.
- It names a living nation, and using a people's name as a personal name is something some members of that nation object to.
- The ch will be read as in church by anyone meeting the spelling cold.
