Where it comes from

The story of Chukwuemeka

The Igbo concept of chi has no clean English equivalent and losing it flattens the whole naming system. A person's chi is their individual spirit or divine allotment, and Igbo proverbs treat it as a partner in the person's fortunes: a man does not rise if his chi does not agree. Chukwu, the great chi, is the supreme being, and names built on it are statements about God's action rather than about the child. Chukwuemeka says God has done greatly. Chukwudi says God exists. Chukwuma says God knows. Alongside them sit names built on the personal chi: Chidera, what chi has written; Chinyere, chi has given; Chioma, good chi. Both classes are full sentences, and Igbo naming assumes a name should say something about the circumstances of the birth or the parents' state of mind, which is a very different premise from choosing a name because it sounds well.
