The story of Chuck
Charles was a Frankish royal name that half of Europe borrowed. English produced Charlie and Chas as short forms, and American English produced Chuck — which no one has satisfactorily explained: it does not follow the rhyming pattern that gave Bob and Bill, and it may have been reinforced by the older English 'chuck' as a term of endearment, recorded in Shakespeare. American families registered Chuck as a legal name from the 1930s, peaking in the early 1950s.
Meaning
free man
Through Charles, from the Germanic karl, 'free man' — a man of standing below the nobility. The word also became a title: Charlemagne's name was so dominant in central Europe that karl itself became the Slavic word for king, which is where korol and król come from.

The Carlton test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Chuck's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Carlton climbed just as high around 1937, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Carlton's path sketches the road Chuck is walking now.
Chuck sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
