Where it comes from

The story of Christobal

In his later years Columbus signed documents with an elaborate device of letters above the phrase Xpo FERENS, a Greek and Latin compression of Christoferens, the Christ-bearer, which is his own name rendered as a title. He also assembled a Book of Prophecies arguing that his voyages were fulfilling scripture and preparing for the recovery of Jerusalem. The legend of St Christopher, a giant who carried travelers across a river and one day found the child on his shoulders unbearably heavy because he carried the world, is itself an allegory built to explain the name, which means Christ-bearer and existed before the story. So a name that generated a saint's biography was later taken by a navigator as a description of his own mission, and the country of Colombia and the city of Cristobal are named for him.

Christobal sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2000, with 20 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

About 1 boy in 15,251 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 244,011 for Christobal itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
