The story of Chi
Vietnamese has six tones in the northern standard, marked by diacritics above and below the vowel, and they are not decoration or emphasis: they distinguish words as completely as consonants do. A speaker hears ma, ma with a rising tone and ma with a heavy one as three unrelated words, in the same way an English speaker hears mat, mad and map. American record systems built for the Latin alphabet strip the marks, and the information is simply gone. The consequence for names is severe: a family's name is recorded in a form that is ambiguous in their own language and unreadable in the intended sense. The same problem affects Vietnamese, Yoruba, Navajo and Czech names in American records, and it is the reason so many immigrant names in the data cannot be given a meaning even when the meaning is perfectly well known to the family.

Without its diacritics the syllable is unrecoverable. In Vietnamese, depending on tone, it can mean a branch or limb, an elder sister and the pronoun used to her, a determination or will, only, and several other things. As a name it is used for both sexes. The same three letters also represent a Chinese surname, a Korean surname, an Igbo word for a personal spirit and a Greek letter. The 1983 American peak follows Vietnamese refugee arrival.
