The story of Chelsey
Chelsea became a fashionable London district in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and its name crossed into given-name use in the English-speaking world in the 1970s — one of a group of London place names, alongside Kensington and Chelsea's neighbors, that became names for girls. American respellings followed almost immediately: Chelsey, Chelsie, Chelsi. This spelling peaked in the early 1990s.
Meaning
chalk landing place
From the Old English cealc, 'chalk' or 'limestone', and hyth, 'landing place' or 'wharf'. The earliest records give forms like Chelchith, and the modern spelling is a much later smoothing. Riverside places named for what was landed at them are common along the Thames.

The Ramona test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Chelsey's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Ramona climbed just as high around 1928, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Ramona's path sketches the road Chelsey is walking now.
Chelsey sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
