Feminine · “Old French chacier”

Chase and catch are the same word twice. Norman French gave English catch and Parisian French gave it chase, both from the same Latin verb for pursuing, and the two dialects treated the initial consonant differently. English kept both and gave them different jobs.

The story of Chayse
English has a large number of doublets from this source, because it borrowed from two French dialects at different times and kept both forms. Norman French kept a hard c where central French had ch, so English has catch and chase, cattle and chattel, castle and chateau, warden and guardian, warranty and guarantee, wile and guile. In each pair one word came through Norman and one through Parisian French, usually a century or two apart, and the language found different uses for them rather than discarding one. Cattle and chattel are the clearest case: both meant property, and English narrowed the first to livestock and kept the second for movable goods, which is why chattel survives mainly in law. Chase and catch have split the same way: one names the pursuit and the other the outcome.
Meaning
Old French chacier, to hunt or pursue
From Old French chacier, to hunt, from Vulgar Latin captiare, to try to seize, from capere, to take. The Norman French form cachier gave English catch; the central French form gave chase. Both entered English after the Conquest and both survive with distinct senses. Chase is an occupational surname for a hunter. Chayse is a modern American respelling; it peaks for girls in 2004.
