Charlemagne fixed this name across a continent. Every European language that had dealings with his empire took a version of it — Karel, Károly, Karol, Carlos, Charles — and the women's names built on it are correspondingly numerous. Charlyn is one of the American ones, with a y standing in for both the i and the e that longer versions carry.

Where it comes from

The story of Charlyn

Charlemagne ruled most of western Europe and was crowned emperor in 800; his name became the standard royal one of the Franks and then of France, and it spread outward from there. Women's forms multiplied late — Charlotte in the seventeenth century, Caroline in the eighteenth, and the -lene and -lyn endings in twentieth-century America. Charlyn belongs to the last of those and appears in the record from 1915, peaking in 1944.

Meaning

a free man's daughter

From the Germanic karl, a free man of no particular rank. Charles is the French form, and English built Charlene, Charline and Charlyn on it in the twentieth century with the endings that were current at the time. The y in this spelling replaces a vowel that is barely heard.

Charlyn sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1950, with 40 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Charlyn went to 5 girls in 2025, but Charlynn is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 12, which makes it the 948th most-given girls’ name of the year — 13,994 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 133,939 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 321,453 for Charlyn itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
