Our story of Cedrick
Ours, offered as ours. There is something quietly appealing about a name that exists because of a slip of the pen. Scott was working from Anglo-Saxon sources and wrote Cedric where the chronicles have Cerdic; the novel was enormously read, and the misprint became a name that thousands of men have carried since. A later children's book about a little lord fixed it further. The real Cerdic behind it is a genuine and rather shadowy figure — probably a Briton, ruling Saxons — and the name is a good deal older and stranger than the novel that made it.
Meaningnot established
Not established
No settled meaning. Scott's Cedric is generally taken to be a slip for Cerdic, the name of the sixth-century founder of Wessex — a name that is itself probably Brittonic rather than Germanic and whose meaning is not established. The novel's spelling has been the standard one ever since.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Cedrick went to 35 boys in 2025, but Cedric, Cedrik and Sedric are the same name said out loud. Together the 4 spellings went to 255, which makes it the 682nd most-given boys’ name of the year — 2,632 places above the chart.
About 1 boy in 6,698 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 48,802 for Cedrick itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Glynn test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Cedrick's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Glynn climbed just as high around 1950, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Glynn's path sketches the road Cedrick is walking now.
Cedrick sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
