Where it comes from

The story of Caraline

The unstressed vowel is the least stable thing in an English name, and Caroline has been written Carolina, Caraline, Carralina and Karoline in American records for two centuries. What is modern is doing it deliberately. Cara became a familiar American name from the 1970s, and once it existed, the a spelling of Caroline stopped looking like a clerk's error and started looking like a choice — a name that contains another name. Caraline peaked in 2011, in the middle of Caroline's own long revival.

Meaning

Germanic "free man", by way of Charles

Caroline is the English form of Italian Carolina, the feminine of Carolus, the Latin form of Charles — from Germanic karl, a free man or a peasant. The etymology is settled for the whole family: Charles, Carl, Karl, Charlotte, Carla, Caroline. Italian cara, "dear", which the respelling seems to invoke, is a different word entirely and is not the source.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Caraline went to 15 girls in 2025, but Karaline is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 29, which makes it the 931st most-given girls’ name of the year — 6,202 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 55,423 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 107,151 for Caraline itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It has a settled Germanic etymology through one of Europe's great royal names.
  • The a spelling makes Cara available as a short form.
  • It sounds entirely classic while looking uncommon.
What to consider
  • Caroline is far more common and will be written by default.
  • The Cara reading is a reanalysis, not a derivation.
  • Caraline, Caroline, Carolyn and Karoline all coexist.
