In Irish, vowels beside a consonant indicate whether that consonant is slender or broad, and are not always pronounced themselves. In Caitlin the i before the t marks the t as slender; the ai is a short a. The result is KAT-leen. English readers, applying English rules, read ai as a long a and i as a short i, and produced a pronunciation that has no relation to the Irish. Because the misreading arrived before most Americans had heard the name spoken, it became standard, and the respellings that followed, Kaitlyn, Katelyn, Caitlynn, Katelynn, Caitlin and a couple of dozen more, all encode the mistake. The Irish name still exists and is still said correctly in Ireland.
