Irish took Cateline from Norman French and made it Caitlín, said with the broad Irish t and the stress on the second syllable. English speakers reading it aloud, without the Irish rules, produced something entirely different — and then, in the 1970s and 1980s, gave that new sound to a very large number of American daughters. The spellings multiplied at once: Katelyn, Caitlin, Katelynn, Kaitlyn, Kaytlyn and a dozen more. This version replaces both vowels with y and ay, which is about as far from the Irish as the name gets.
