The drink is worth the detour. English met the fortified wine of Jerez in the sixteenth century and wrote its name as sherris, following the Spanish as best it could. Then English did what English does to a word ending in an s sound: it heard a plural, decided the singular must be sherry, and produced a word that had never existed in any language. The name Sherry came afterwards, off the drink and off Charlotte and Cherie at the same time, and by the middle of the last century it was everywhere. Sharri sits between that name and Sharon, spelled the way an American family of that generation would spell a short name it wanted to look finished: a doubled consonant in the middle, a single i at the end, and nothing on the page to say which of the two names it came from.
