The story of Brodi
The Brodies held their lands in Moray from at least the twelfth century, and Brodie Castle stands there still; the clan's charters were burned in 1645 during the civil wars, which is why the earlier history is thin. The surname traveled to America and Australia with Scottish emigration. As a given name Brody is a recent American development, rising steeply from the late 1990s into the top two hundred, and the variants followed: Brodie, Brodi, Brodee and Brodey all appear in the 2000s, with Brodi peaking in 2008.

A ditch or muddy place
Brodie in Moray takes its name from a Gaelic or Pictish word, and the derivation is not settled: brothach, a ditch or muddy place, is the usual proposal, and a word for a rampart has also been offered. The clan and the surname come from the place, and the given name from the surname. The -i ending of Brodi is an American spelling convention with no separate meaning.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
