Brien
Masculine
Brien is overwhelmingly a boys’ name — 3,588 boys against 5 girls since 1880.
Brittany is named after Britain because Britons moved there. From the fifth century onward they crossed to Armorica in numbers, and Breton is a Brittonic language, closer to Welsh and Cornish than to anything else in France, which is why Breton and Welsh names overlap.

The story of Brien
The settlement of Armorica by Britons from the south-west of Britain, from roughly the fourth to the seventh centuries, is one of the better-attested migrations of the period and it left a Brittonic language on the continent. Breton is closely related to Cornish and, less closely, to Welsh, and it is not related to French at all. The migration also carried a stock of names, which is why Brian, Alan, Judoc, Tudor and Yves appear on both sides of the Channel. Breton lords came to England with William in 1066, since Brittany was a Norman ally, and brought those names back to a country whose own Brittonic population had been displaced five centuries earlier. Brian therefore reached England twice, once with Bretons through Normandy and once with the Irish through Scotland and the north, and the two streams are not always separable.

The Burdette test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Brien's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Burdette climbed just as high around 1922, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Burdette's path sketches the road Brien is walking now.
Brien sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
