The story of Brennen
Several distinct Irish families were called O Braonain, which English clerks wrote as Brennan, and the name is now among the more common Irish surnames. It crossed to America in the nineteenth century in large numbers and moved to the front of the name in the twentieth, along with Ryan, Kelly and Casey. The -en spelling is an American variation on the standard Irish -an, made at a time when parents were adjusting the last syllable of almost every name they used.

descendant of Braonan, from braon, a drop
Irish braon means a drop, of water or of rain, and Braonan is its diminutive. What the byname meant is the open question: sorrow has been proposed, on the idea of a tear, and moisture or rain on the plain sense. Neither can be shown. The surname itself is well documented.

Brennen's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Kenyatta climbed just as high around 1975, and its whole arc is on record.
