Kenyatta
Masculine · “a beaded belt”
Kenyatta is given to both — 3,216 boys and 4,255 girls since 1880. See Kenyatta as a girl nameSee other names given to both
Jomo Kenyatta chose the name himself. He was born Kamau wa Muigai and took Kenyatta from a beaded Maasai belt he wore — kinyata in Kikuyu — then led Kenya to independence in nineteen sixty-three and became its first president. Almost nobody who names a child this knows the belt is in it.

The story of Kenyatta
African independence changed American naming. Ghana in fifty-seven, Kenya in sixty-three, and a long list after them put African place names and leaders' names into American households at exactly the moment when families were looking for names outside the European stock. Kenyatta, Kenya, Nairobi, Zaire and Sudan all appear on American certificates in the decades that follow. It is one of the clearest cases of a naming pattern with a datable political cause, and it produced names that are entirely American and entirely deliberate.

a beaded belt
The usual account derives Kenyatta from a Kikuyu word for the beaded belt Jomo Kenyatta habitually wore, and he adopted the name in the nineteen-twenties. Some accounts connect it instead to the name of the country, which is itself from Mount Kenya, from a Kikuyu name for the mountain. The two are entangled and the sequence is disputed. What is documented is that the name was chosen by one man rather than inherited.
Pronouncing Kenyatta
ken-YAH-tuh
ken-YAH-tuh, three syllables, stress in the middle. Some say ken-YAT-uh with a flatter middle vowel, and both are heard in American use. Kikuyu says it with fuller vowels throughout.

Fashion outlook
Kenyatta sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- The name has a documented origin in one named person and one datable decision.
- Kenya and Ken are both usable short forms and both are standing names.
- It works for either child, which the record confirms.
- It carries a specific political history, which is a strength for some families and a consideration for others.
- Jomo Kenyatta's own record in power is argued about, and a child will eventually read that.
- Three syllables with a middle stress means the name is dictated rather than assumed.
