The story of Brendyn
St Brendan of Clonfert, who died around 577, is the reason the name survived. The Navigatio Sancti Brendani, written some three centuries after his death, describes a voyage west across the Atlantic in a hide boat in search of an island paradise, and it was one of the most widely copied books of the medieval world, translated into a dozen languages. Its geography was taken seriously for centuries: St Brendan's Isle appears on European charts into the 1700s, moving further west each time it failed to be found. The name's Irish spelling, Breanainn, comes from a Welsh word rather than an Irish one, which is a reminder that Irish and Welsh naming exchanged material long before English took anything from either. Brendyn keeps the sound and replaces the ending with the suffix American parents were using on everything in the 2000s.

Old Welsh breenhin, prince
Brendan is the anglicized form of Irish Breanainn, generally derived from Old Welsh breenhin, a prince or king. The derivation is widely accepted but the route is not fully documented, and some accounts prefer an unrelated Irish source. The -yn spelling is a modern American variant; the peak of this form is 2009.

The Oshea test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Brendyn's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Oshea climbed just as high around 1993, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Oshea's path sketches the road Brendyn is walking now.
