There is no feminine of Brian in Irish. The language never made one, and none is recorded in a thousand years of Irish naming. Brianna, Breanna and Breana were built in the United States in the twentieth century by adding a Latin ending to an Irish name, which is a thing English does and Irish does not.

Where it comes from

The story of Breana

Irish forms feminines by using a different name, not by inflecting a masculine one. There is no female Brian, no female Conor, no female Seamus. English, having absorbed a Latin habit through French, does the opposite: it adds -a, -ine, -ette or -elle to whatever is at hand, which is how Roberta, Josephine, Antoinette and Michelle exist. When Irish surnames and given names became fashionable in America in the second half of the twentieth century, that machinery was applied to them wholesale. Brianna appears in the data in the 1970s, is in the top hundred by 1990, and generates Breanna, Breana, Briana and Bryanna behind it. Breana peaks in 1994. The name is genuinely Irish in one half and genuinely American in the other, and it is worth saying which is which.

Meaningnot established

Not established

Breana is a feminine formed from Brian, whose own meaning is genuinely unresolved. The usual glosses, noble or high or strong, are guesses; the most that can be said is that the name is Old Irish and may contain an element meaning hill or height. Since the source name has no settled meaning, no feminine built on it can have one either, and Breana adds nothing of its own beyond a Latin -a.

Breana sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1996, with 698 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Breana went to 13 girls in 2025, but Breanna is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 82, which makes it the 878th most-given girls’ name of the year — 7,007 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 19,601 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 123,636 for Breana itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Bree is a clean, established short form.
  • The name is completely familiar in sound even where the spelling is not.
  • The Irish half of its history is real and documented.
What to consider
  • Brianna and Breanna are both far more common.
  • Two vowel readings of the middle syllable are in use.
  • The name has no settled meaning, because the name it is built on does not.
