Where it comes from

The story of Breanna

Brian Boru was high king of Ireland and died at Clontarf in 1014, and his name has never gone out of Irish use since. It became extremely common in twentieth-century America, and feminines followed in the usual way — Brianna, Breanna, Brianne, Bryanna. Breanna rose through the 1980s and peaked in the mid-1990s, when the whole family was near its height.

Not established

Brian's origin is not settled. The most-repeated readings connect it to a Celtic element bre, 'hill' — hence 'high' or 'noble' — or to bri, 'esteem' or 'worth'. Both are reconstructions. The -anna ending is an English feminine addition and carries no meaning of its own.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Breanna went to 69 girls in 2025, but Breana is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 82, which makes it the 878th most-given girls’ name of the year — 1,664 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 19,601 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 23,294 for Breanna itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Brian behind it has a documented royal history and continuous Irish use for a thousand years.
  • Bree and Anna are both available and are very different in feel.
  • Three syllables with a strong middle, a rhythm that carries well.
What to consider
  • Brianna is commoner and the two spellings are constantly confused.
  • Brian's own meaning is genuinely unrecovered.
  • It is closely dated to the 1990s in American records.
