Brailyn
Feminine
Brailyn is given to both — 1,081 girls and 400 boys since 1880. See other names given to both
Brailyn writes its first vowel with ai rather than ay, and that is the whole difference between it and Braylyn. English has both digraphs for the same long a, and modern American naming treats them as distinct choices: ay reads as plain and current, ai reads as slightly older and more European. Brailyn's peak is 2014.

Our story of Brailyn
English has three common ways to write the long a of face — a-consonant-e, ay, and ai — and the reason is historical accident rather than design. Ai came in with Norman French, ay was its word-final variant, and the silent e developed separately in Middle English. By the eighteenth century the distribution had frozen: rain but ray, main but may, plain but play, with ay preferred at the end of a word and ai in the middle. Modern naming ignores that rule entirely and treats the two as interchangeable stylistic options — Braylyn or Brailyn, Kaylee or Kailee, Jayden or Jaiden. What that means in practice is that a spelling choice which once carried real information about a word's position now carries only information about a family's taste. Brailyn takes the medial spelling in a name where the vowel is medial, which is, by accident, the historically correct one.

Not established
No documented source. The Brai- front descends by sound from Brayden, which itself has no traceable origin — it appears in American records only from the 1980s and the Irish derivations offered for it are unsupported. The -lyn ending is a free-standing American suffix from Lynn, ultimately Welsh llyn, 'lake', but carrying nothing in this position. Both halves can be described precisely and neither means anything.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Brailyn went to 20 girls in 2025, but Braylynn, Braylin and Braylyn and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 5 spellings went to 142, which makes it the 818th most-given girls’ name of the year — 5,099 places above the chart.
About 1 girl in 11,319 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 80,363 for Brailyn itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Crystalyn test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Brailyn's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Crystalyn climbed just as high around 1984, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Crystalyn's path sketches the road Brailyn is walking now.
Brailyn sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
