Where it comes from

The story of Crystalyn

Crystal came into use as a girl's name among the jewel and mineral names, alongside Pearl, Opal and Ruby. In the early twentieth century the word also named something new: the crystal set, a radio receiver whose detector was a small mineral crystal touched by a fine wire, and which needed no battery because the incoming signal itself drove the earphone. Much earlier, the Elizabethan scholar John Dee had used polished stones to seek visions, and the British Museum keeps a crystal ball and an obsidian mirror associated with him. Crystalyn gathers that old word up and gives it one more syllable.

Meaning

Crystal with the -lyn ending

Crystal comes through Latin from the Greek krystallos. The -lyn ending adds no meaning of its own; it is the finish shared by Carolyn, Marilyn and Jacquelyn.

Crystalyn sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1984, with 38 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Crystalyn sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Built from a word everyone knows, so it is understood at once.
  • Comes with Crystal as a ready-made everyday form.
  • Rare in its full form, so a Crystalyn is unlikely to share it.
What to consider
  • Crystalynn, Crystalin, Kristalyn and Cristalyn are all plausible, so the spelling will need to be given every time.
  • Crystal on its own had its heyday a generation or two ago, which dates the base name even though the full form is rare.
  • 'Crystal' is also street slang for a drug, which older children sometimes know; it rarely sticks, but it is better heard here first.
